This afternoon, we received the visit of 6th year students of the International Baccalaureate (IB) of the Pestalozzi School, with which we have a collaboration agreement since 2012.
Today we were visited by 15 students who are in their last year of high school at the Pestalozzi School with the aim of getting to know the facilities of the Institute, to learn about the work that is done here and to carry out a laboratory practice.
They were welcomed by Patricio Yankilevich, coordinator of the IBioBA Bioinformatics Platform, who gave them an introductory talk about the lines of work and research groups of the Institute, the link between IBioBA and the Max Planck Society, and the work of CONICET scientists. He also told them about the scope of the research carried out through the Genomic Data Analysis Platform.
Then, with the help of Julieta Campi, they practiced in the laboratory to extract DNA plasmids. Finally, they toured the different spaces and laboratories of the institute, and learned about the use of fluorescence microscopes and the electrophysiology setup, among other things.
Ignacio Mohr is one of the biology teachers who accompanied the Pestalozzi students. In 2016, when he was in his 6th year of high school, he came with the school to get to know the Institute and then participated in the German science competition Jugend Forscht (Youth Researches). “Coming back to IBioBA allows me to value the experience I had here as a student, both from a scientific and human point of view. I want to transmit to the boys and girls the unique opportunity of being able to come to a first level institute to have this scientific experience”, he reflects.
The visit is part of the cooperation agreement that IBioBA has with the Pestalozzi Cultural Association. This agreement represents one of the pillars of the institute, which seeks to complement its basic research work with actions aimed at science communication and the promotion of scientific vocations.
